SmartMoney: Dumb Article on Fundraisers
I am sick of the financial media beating up on fundraising. Every few months, some piece appears, seeming to delight in scaring donors with a horror story of an errant ratio or an unorthodox practice. But when I saw this blog called “10 Things Fundraisers Won’t Tell You” on the SmartMoney page of the Wall Street Journal site, I could take it no more. I’ve hit back (in a very lady-like way) with:

A Cautious Social Media Convert
I’m not an early adopter. I’m still very happy with my iPhone 3G and I won’t be lining up for a 3D television. So you can imagine that I’ve been slow on the uptake with social media. After all, I’m a major gifts person. I’m an advocate of ‘face-to-face’ fundraising. But recent developments in the middle east have got my attention. Women have moved to the forefront of philanthropy for a lot of reasons.… Read the rest- 08 March 2026

Text Giving and Multi-Channel Fundraising: RUUP4IT?
When the Fourmile Canyon fire was raging through our area, I saw a news piece on TV that ended with an ask to text donations to support the fire fighters. I grabbed my phone and texted $5 right away to The mGive Foundation. I never heard from them again and I have no idea what they did with my money, but at the time I was inspired.
Now, five months later, I see a report… Read the rest- 02 March 2026

Colorado Gives Day: A Mathematical Puzzle
I have to admit to being a little skeptical of Colorado Gives Day. I was worried that the focus on one day might diminish overall giving in November and December. I worried about a lower overall average gift. I thought it might turn donors off to get multiple appeals from several organizations to give on December 8th.
But, as far as the measure of giving is concerned, Colorado Gives Day broke the bank. Over 18,000… Read the rest- 16 December 2025
