  • A New Way of Thinking About Donor Motivations

    Not to confuse things, but maybe age and gender don’t matter at all when it comes to understanding how and why people give. The Money for Good Project recently completed a comprehensive study of 4,000 high net worth individuals and their reasons for giving. The report offers an entirely new framework for segmenting donors by behavior rather than demographics. This is in sharp contrast to how we have traditionally thought about targeting donor populations.

  • Too Much of a Good Thing?

    Here’s something you probably already suspected. Last year, volunteering had its biggest increase in six years. According to an annual report compiled by the public-private Corporation for National and Community Service, 1.6 million more Americans volunteered in 2009 than did in 2008.   • And Now for Some Good News

    Blackbaud has just come out with a new Index of Charitable Giving that will be released quarterly. This is great news…no longer will we have to wait until Giving USA’s June release to find out what happened during the prior year.
    More good news… Blackbaud’s first report shows first quarter 2010 fundraising results up by 12.1% over last year.

  • Rainy Day Giving (and Keeping)

    Giving USA just released its philanthropy report for 2009. Turns out, last year was as bad as we thought. Philanthropy dropped 3.6% (3.2% when adjusted for inflation), the steepest decline since Giving USA started tracking the numbers in 1956. Of course, this is lockstep with the overall decline in our economy…2009 was the worse year since the Great Depression.
